What it costs to furnish an empty home in Uruguay

You found the rental and it is empty. This page ranks what to buy first, puts today’s market price next to each thing, shows the second-hand price where one exists, and adds up three baskets so you do not have to.

What it costs

Three ways to furnish the same home. The minimum buys second-hand where second-hand is sane; the decent one buys entry-level new; the complete one adds what can wait and buys at the middle of the market.

Mínima

Only what cannot wait, buying used where it makes sense.

$21.518 USD 519

14 things · that is $1.793 a month for a year

Every category in this basket has a price.

Decente

That, plus the first-weeks list, all entry-level new.

Completa

Adds what you buy when there is money left, at mid-market prices.

Every category in this basket has a price.

What to buy first

The order measures necessity, not price and not popularity: at the top is what makes the house work, at the bottom what can wait months with no consequences. Every row says why it sits where it does.

The house does not work without it

Day one, no argument.

Heladera

  • Media (130 a 330 L)$18.943–$24.82984 prices observed$3.850 −84% 18 prices observed

  • Frigobar (hasta 120 L)New: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • 1 plaza (90 cm)$3.999–$5.9909 prices observedused not advised
  • 2 plazas (140 cm)$9.390–$12.876153 prices observedused not advised
  • Queen o King (160 cm+)$17.990–$22.2458 prices observedused not advised

Cocina o anafe

  • Anafe (2 hornallas)$900–$1.13325 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • Cocina 4 hornallas con horno$8.055–$10.67462 prices observed$2.000 −81% 21 prices observed

Calefón

Agua caliente.

  • 50 litros$5.520–$7.420133 prices observed$3.500 −53% 15 prices observed
  • 80 litros$7.781–$9.95454 prices observed$3.500 −65% 18 prices observed
  • 100 litros o másNew: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • 16 a 18 cm$1.454–$1.68712 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • 20 a 22 cm$2.496–$3.63284 prices observed$900 −75% 10 prices observed
  • 24 cm o más$2.120–$3.29936 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • 20 a 22 cm$459–$62344 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • 28 cm o más$1.060–$1.50731 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • Cuchillo de cocina 20 cm$546–$99988 prices observedused not advised
  • Juego de cuchillos$660–$1.10846 prices observedused not advised

Cubiertos

Comer.

  • Servicio para 12 (48 piezas)New: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

Platos

Comer.

  • Vajilla para 6$1.390–$2.19085 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • Vajilla para 12New: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

Vasos

Tomar agua.

  • Set de 6$449–$733110 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • Set de 12$721–$95510 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • 1 plaza$797–$1.35215 prices observedused not advised
  • 2 plazas o queen$1.150–$1.43289 prices observedused not advised

Toallas buy 2

  • Toallón$549–$649149 prices observedused not advised

  • Balde, escoba y secador$600–$98085 prices observedused not advised

  • Con tapa o pedal$783–$1.32099 prices observedused not advised

First weeks

You can improvise for days, then you cannot.

Lavarropas

  • Carga superior$10.297–$12.37912 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • Carga frontal$14.499–$19.500151 prices observed$3.100 −84% 26 prices observed

Microondas

  • 24 L o más$5.596–$6.63253 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

Ropero o placard

  • 2 puertas$4.190–$7.19186 prices observed$2.500 −65% 21 prices observed

  • Mesa con 6 sillas$7.390–$8.49053 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • Madera o bambú$672–$1.19025 prices observedused not advised

  • Estándar$746–$1.230154 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

Almohada buy 2

  • Estándar$698–$1.179141 prices observedused not advised

Acolchado o frazada

  • 2 plazas o queen$1.875–$2.881118 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • 1 plazaNew: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

Plancha

  • A vapor$1.267–$1.82487 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

Ventilador

  • De pie$1.488–$2.253152 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • De techoNew: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

Estufa o calefactor

  • Caloventor$690–$96075 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • Panel o aceiteNew: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

When there is money left

Improves the home; nothing breaks without it.

Televisor

  • 32 pulgadas$558–$19.026103 prices observed$3.550 −81% 8 prices observed
  • 43 pulgadas$10.969–$12.73712 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • 55 pulgadas o más$19.657–$22.54954 prices observed$7.500 −67% 5 prices observed

Aire acondicionado

  • 12.000 BTU$13.190–$16.517105 prices observed$3.750 −77% 22 prices observed
  • 18.000 BTU o más$24.567–$25.78644 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

Sofá

Comodidad pura.

  • 2 cuerpos$10.490–$13.20037 prices observed$6.500 −51% 20 prices observed
  • 3 cuerpos o esquinero$12.345–$18.990115 prices observed$10.500 −45% 8 prices observed

Pava o caldera

  • Pava eléctrica$532–$83047 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • Pava comúnNew: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

Mixer o licuadora

  • Mixer de mano$864–$1.295112 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data
  • Licuadora de vasoNew: no price this weekUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • Estándar$349–$50588 prices observedused not advised

Aspiradora

  • De trineo o escoba$3.907–$6.280152 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

Can wait months

There is almost always something cheaper that does the same.

Tostadora

  • 2 rebanadas$1.160–$1.729161 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

Cafetera

Gusto personal, no infraestructura. Entra cuando ya no falta nada.

  • De filtro$1.121–$1.84590 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

  • Hasta 45 L$3.213–$4.76787 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

Impresora

  • Multifunción$4.059–$9.84010 prices observedUsed: not enough second-hand data

With what I have, how far do I get?

Enter what you have and walk down in order of necessity. It deliberately does not reorder to fit more in: buying six cheap things instead of the fridge fills the list and leaves you without a fridge.

I already have this

Tick what you do not need to buy and it drops out of the plan.

Type an amount to see how far it goes.

What no price tells you

Four things that come from experience rather than a spreadsheet. The first three were argued in the r/uruguay thread that started this page.

Wooden cutting board

Metal or glass dulls the knife fast, and the knife costs more than the board. Thicker warps less; bamboo ones are well priced.

Few good pots, not many bad ones

A thin base burns everything and cannot be fixed. One large pot, one small one and a frying pan cook almost anything.

An air conditioner already dehumidifies

It has a dry mode, and in truth every mode dries the air. They are not identical — a dehumidifier collects the water in a tank — but for normal damp you do not need both.

A used mattress is the exception

It is the one thing on this list where the cheap option is bad advice: bedbugs, mites, and a sag you cannot see until you sleep on it. Everything else second-hand is a real market.

Where the prices come from

Sixteen Uruguayan storefronts are read through their own published catalogues, plus Mercado Libre and Facebook Marketplace. Prices in dollars are converted at the day’s rate so rows can be compared.

New and used are never averaged together: they are different markets, and mixing them gives a number that describes neither. A saving is only published when both sides have enough observations.

Each category gets its own percentile band rather than a fixed multiplier: the real spread of a frying pan is not the spread of a fridge. A row far below its own band is flagged and never leads.

If a basket is missing a category, the total is published as partial and says which one. A total missing the fridge is lower than the truth and reads as a bargain.

Questions

How much does it cost to furnish a home in Uruguay?
It depends what you buy and in what condition. This page builds three baskets from today’s market: a minimum with the essentials bought used where sensible, a decent one all entry-level new, and a complete one with what you buy when there is money left.
What do you buy first for an empty home?
A fridge, a mattress, something to cook on, and the minimum to eat and clean. That is tier S on this page: the house does not work without it. The washing machine, the microwave and the table come after.
Is it worth buying appliances second-hand?
Generally yes, and the measured saving is on every row. The exception is the mattress. For a fridge or a washing machine, ask to see it running: the compressor and the spin cycle are what fail, and neither shows in a photo.
Are the prices current?
They are harvested daily, and each row says how many prices were observed. A category that stopped having fresh prices is not shown with an old one — it is shown as having no price.
